The Umbrella Academy season 2 perfectly set up a third season – but when will it release and what will the story be? Based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy was released on Netflix in February 2019. The series was very well received by critics and audiences, and even surpassed one of the platform’s most popular titles. Not long after, it was renewed for a second season.
The Umbrella Academy follows the dysfunctional family of adopted siblings (and superheroes), the Hargreeves. On October 1, 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth at the same time, but none of them was pregnant when the day began. This curious event caught the attention of eccentric billionaire Sir Reginal Hargreeves, who set out to adopt as many of those babies as he could, and got seven of them. Reginald trained them and formed the superhero team “The Umbrella Academy”, but he wasn’t the best father figure, and the siblings ended up parting ways. The Hargreeves reunited years later for Reginald’s funeral and to stop the fast-approaching apocalypse, which turned out to be caused by their sister Vanya (Ellen Page), who everyone believed was powerless.
In order to save themselves from the end of the world, Five (Aidan Gallagher), made a major jump through time and space and took his siblings with him, but such an ambitious jump had consequences. Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy saw the Hargreeves landing in Dallas, but in different years between 1960 and 1963 – and they brought the apocalypse with them. The Umbrella Academy is one of Netflix’s most popular titles, and season 2 left everything ready for season 3 – here’s what’s we know so far about the future of the series.
The Umbrella Academy hasn’t been renewed for season 3 yet, but it’s highly likely Netflix will renew it at some point. Season 1 was a big hit, and depending on how well season 2 performs will be how long the streaming giant will take to make a third season official. Judging by how season 2 ended, it looks like the team behind the show has big hopes of it being renewed, and prepared the ground for a very exciting season.
Season 2 took a bit over a year to arrive, but if season 3 is meant to be, it’s going to take longer than that. Many TV and movie productions had to be put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, so The Umbrella Academy season 3 would have to wait a bit to start shooting. If it all passes soon and the entertainment industry can go back to normal, season 3 of The Umbrella Academy could arrive in 2022 at the earliest.
Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for The Umbrella Academy season 2.
So far, the Umbrella Academy comics have three volumes: Apocalypse Suite, Dallas, and Hotel Oblivion. Season 1 was based on Apocalypse Suite and season 2 on Dallas, though with big differences. At this point, the series is writing its own story with borrowed characters and elements from the comics, which isn’t bad at all. Still, season 3 could be based on Hotel Oblivion while continuing with the plotlines and characters established in season 2, which made some big reveals in its final episodes.
The Hargreeves now know at least one of the other 36 babies born on the same day and circumstances as them has superpowers, and it’s none other than Lila (Ritu Arya), The Handler’s adoptive daughter and Diego’s ex-girlfriend. Lila escaped with a briefcase just as Diego and the rest were trying to convince her to join them and be part of the family, so it’s unknown where she’s now. However, the Hargreeves will have a bigger problem to deal with than Lila. Also thanks to a briefcase, the siblings are now back in 2019, but as they altered the timeline by meeting Reginald in 1963, they arrived at the mansion of “The Sparrow Academy”, where a different version of Ben is still alive and leading the Sparrow team. The Umbrella Academy season 3 would then see the team dealing with this new and unknown timeline where they don’t have a home and there’s a different team in action, as well as with whatever plans and experiments Reginald has been working on and Lila’s possible return. In addition to all that, there’s Harlan and his powers, which could have consequences even after 56 years.
