Project Runway's Geoffrey Mac Mourns Best Friend Due to Coronavirus

Season 18 Project Runway winner Geoffrey Mac is mourning his best friend due to coronavirus. Mac made the tearful announcement on Instagram Monday that his friend Nashom Wooden died.

His moving tribute comes mere weeks after his epic win on the long-running design show aired. To date, Mac’s announcement has garnered nearly 33,000 likes. The 42-year-old designer was closely acquainted with Wooden, a well-known drag performer who went by the name Mona Foot. Wooden was beloved by many in the New York drag community, and was also an accomplished musician who performed in the group, The Ones. This trio achieved a No. 4 Billboard Dance hit with the song, “Flawless” back in the early 2000’s. Mac, who was an irreverent fan favorite on his season of Project Runway, was just one of many celebrities left reeling from the news of Wooden’s passing.

In the video, Mac spoke from the heart and appeared shocked by the news: “Hi, it’s Geoffrey Mac. I lost my best friend today from the coronavirus, Nashom Wooden.” Mac continued,  “And I just want to make sure that everybody out there stays healthy and takes care of each other because the virus is really real. And, I’m just so sorry.” Check out the emotional post below:

The COVID-19 health crisis continues to wage war through communities throughout the United States and abroad. In New York City alone, the disease has become a strain on medical and financial institutions alike. Wooden, at the time of his death, had only recently been diagnosed with the virus. The drag and queer communities and Project Runway fans have been quick to herald Wooden’s passing with tributes and words of caution for others to stay safe.

Someone once said that relatives are the people you’re related to, but family is the collection of people who have your back no matter what. It’s clear that Nashom Wooden and Geoffrey Mac meant a lot to each other. Grief is never easy, so it’s a powerful gift for Mac to share his suffering with others who may not have the tools to cope with loss in the same manner that he has. COVID-19 is a phenomenal illness that has brought people together in strange ways, and alienated them in others. The loss of Wooden’s life and countless others should serve as a warning to people that no one is impervious to death or sickness. No one should be forced to bury a good friend, or have to mourn a loved one. May Geoffrey Mac and Wooden’s other close friends and family members take solace in knowing that at least his illness was short-lived, so that preserving his wonderful legacy can now be their main focus.
