In 2017 Shane and his wife were working to build a new cabin. During one of the routine work, Shane fell off the ladder and had broken his back. Shane was admitted to Central Peninsula Hospital Alaska. The impact resulted in breaking L2 vertebra, and that the horizontal fracture extended two-thirds of the way through the bone. On the recovery, he could still walk but was limited to lifting.
